Both harmonic drive and cycloid drive are compact high ratio drives, which are suitable for anthropomorphic robots. However, a recent study has shown that cycloidal transmission is more efficient than harmonic transmission.
A cycloid drive is a mechanical gear system that uses a ring gear housing (similar to a planetary gear drive) that holds an eccentric CAM around the outer ring. When the eccentric CAM rotates, it deforms the cycloidal disc into an elliptical shape. The cycloidal disc then engages with the inner teeth of the annular gear housing.
Cycloidal drive Reverse drive: Unlike harmonic drive, cycloidal drive can be reversed without causing any gap or notch behavior on the output shaft.
